To highlight the work of Wellington County’s Archives, several events are taking place across the county this month.
Wellington County’s Archives is dedicated to appraising, selecting, acquiring, and conserving the archival records relating to the history of Wellington County, including its people, places, and organizations.
Throughout April, the Wellington County Archives is offering behind-the-scenes guided tours of the processing room and storage vault.
There will also be opportunities to Ask an Archivist questions about research or records.
First is at the Erin Library, on Saturday, April 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; then at the Marden Library, on Monday, April 22, from noon to 4 p.m.
Aside from these events, visitors to the Archives are welcome during business hours. Staff are available to answer questions related to family history research using ancestry.ca, family photograph preservation, or how to research the history of your house. There is no appointment necessary, and online video calls can be arranged.
The historical records include diaries, local history books, assessment rolls, and voters lists; photographs and slides; films, videos and audio tapes; architectural drawings, maps or plans; and microforms of newspapers. There are also many digital resources available from the Archives.
Archivist Karen Wagner said, “Archival records are invaluable to many user groups, including family historians, individuals working on building histories, students, lawyers, surveyors, and engineers, to name a few.”
