This funding of approximately $12 million dollars has been utilized since 2023, and will continue until 2026, to enhance the County’s housing portfolio, focusing on sustainability, accessibility, and modernization.
The CMHC committed $12 million to the County of Wellington in September 2022 under the Affordable Housing Fund. This funding was part of a broader initiative to support the maintenance and improvement of housing infrastructure across the region.
Since April 2023, the CMHC funding has supported the maintenance needs of the County’s directly owned and operated housing portfolio of more than 1,200 subsidized and affordable housing units in Guelph and Wellington.
The projects not only modernized the County’s housing stock, but also contributed to significant environmental benefits through reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
The $12 million CMHC grant covered up to 30 per cent of the capital costs, with the County contributing the remaining 70 per cent. This resulted in a total investment of $40 million in the County’s housing infrastructure over three years.
Joint Social Services and Land Ambulance Chair Councillor David Anderson said, “This funding has helped finance critical improvements to our housing infrastructure, ensuring those facing housing insecurities have access to safe and sustainable living conditions.”
