The Township of Wellington North welcomed more than 200 past and present residents, staff and Council members to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Township on Friday, June 7 at the Municipal Office in Kenilworth.
The event, which ran from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., featured a free barbecue, kids’ activities (touch-a-truck event with vehicles from Transportation Services and the Wellington North Fire Service, face painting, crafts, and an appearance by Chuckles the Balloon Artist), a slideshow of photos from the past 25 years, a display of entries in the 25th Anniversary Art Contest, and the dedication of the 25th Anniversary Time Capsule.
And of course, plenty of memories were shared by those in attendance.
“It’s amazing to think that it has already been 25 years since the Village of Arthur, Town of Mount Forest, Township of Arthur, Township of West Luther, and some of outlying areas of the Townships of Peel and West Garafraxa came together to form what we now know as the Township of Wellington North,” said Mayor Andy Lennox. “It was great to see so many familiar faces come together to celebrate this milestone – former staff and members of Council, friends, family and neighbours.”
Among the dignitaries in attendance on June 7 were Perth-Wellington MP John Nater, Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae, Wellington County Councillor Steve O’Neill, Don Ross (Wellington North’s first Mayor), and former Councillors Mark Goetz and Evelyne Near.
The Township would also like to thank Walker Industries of Arthur, who provided volunteers to assist with parking during the event.
There will be further events and initiatives in 2024 to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Township of Wellington North, including the return of the Mayor’s Charity Bonspiel later this year, and the launch of the “25 Fun Facts and Folklore of Wellington North” social media initiative.
